My Story

I have always had a deep connection to the sea and when I had the opportunity to move to Devon with my young family, I jumped at the chance! I never feel more connected to mother nature than when standing on a windswept beach looking out to sea.

My inspiration for ‘The Seaweed Studio’ first began whilst helping out on a local beach clean a few years ago. As I picked out small pieces of plastic from the masses of washed up seaweed, I started to take notice of just how beautiful and diverse seaweed really is. I took some washed up specimens home and tried pressing them. The results were stunning and soon our family home had turned into a seaweed pressing factory and ‘The Seaweed Studio’ was born!

Seaweed varies immensely in its colour, texture and form and I have tried to reflect this in my art. I have created a variety of products, carefully maintaining the natural beauty of the original seaweed.

I hope to raise awareness of the natural beauty of seaweed but also of its important role in our oceans.

Next time you’re at the beach, take a closer look at the washed up seaweed. Lift up the heavy ones to see what’s hiding underneath and you may find a treasure!

Seaweed is often overlooked and unappreciated for its vital role in marine ecosystems and carbon capture. It is so much more than a slimy encounter in the sea, in fact I like to think of it as our flowers of the sea.

Flowers of the Sea

“Call us not weeds, for we are flowers of the sea

For lovely, bright and delicate are we

We care not about rain or for April showers

And love growing into majestic green towers

So call us not weeds, for we are the oceans dear flowers'“

Adapted from a poem by E.L Aveline 1840

I am committed to reducing my own environmental impact as well as supporting local organisations who improve our costal ecosystems.

The Seaweed Studio only uses biodegradable, recycled and carbon neutral products.

Our prints are made in the UK and the development of the prints is fully carbon balanced, so each print helps create native woodlands here in the UK.
